...when she smiles, I stop thinking.

I look at my phone, 2.30pm.

It is a crazy sunny afternoon, just from a Swahili class that has sucked the life out of my day. A chill at a cool place might help so i head to the Frustration square...I don't really know why they called it that but I heard it is reserved for the 'broken souls'. If you get heartbroken, or you are starving or she left you for some Subaru  dude, then this is the place to be.

I can comfortably say this is my spot too, the sun out here is trying to break me.

There is this lady seated next to me. She is a nice person, that I can tell through her smile.

Damn! The smile...so perfect!

I'm pretty sure she makes flowers blossom, she literally might be the reason why trees have leaves... Pure bliss! I actually steal a few more glances just to be sure.  Probably this is what they mean when they say God created her after he had had his lunch. Worthy thane of beauty. Guys, I know I'm a bit extra on this but if you saw her, I'm sure you would too.

Well I like her already.

She's smart.

I don't know how I know that but I have this kafeeling that she is. When she smiles, I stop thinking!

'Hey you?'

'Hey' she replies.

She seems uninterested. It is starting to feel uncomfortable now. I really don't know what to say to an uninterested lady,

she probably 'don't do short guys'.

It's not like I'm short anyway, okay I know I'm short but not so short, I mean,

I'm slightly tall.

Aaaah! maybe it's not even about me.

After all, what would a pretty lady like her be doing at the Frustration square... something must be not right.e

Real men don't give up, so they say. So how about I try a few more words just to be sure she's really not interested in this chunk of a man haha.

'You seemingly would offer a good company on a day like this, would you mind if I joined you?'

She looks up to my face. It's like she is trying to rate me. It is a tense moment.

I hope her scales of justice will favor.

She vaguely smiles and says

'I dont'

And so I move closer...this feels a little good, it actually feels so good that I can feel my hair's tingle.

After a few awkward moments of trying to blend in a conversation, we catch the momentum.

Wait... is she even laughing at my jokes?

She says  I'm funny and with that  I now know I can make a pretty good comedian haha!

It's like starting off a merry go round, the first few turns are boring till it's fast enough with less effort.

I may be slightly tall, not as tall as Ochieng' though but I have my way with words. We'd probably say I know my way around a woman's heart...I guess I do. When we are the peak of our conversation her phones rings, she let's it ring. If you closely examined it, isnt that a good sign?

'I'm sorry I have to leave now '

I can see a grin on her face as she says this, she is probably sad she is leaving.

"I didn't actually catch your name." I say as I try to figure out what to say next.

"It's Aneeta, with a double e," she says as she stands up to go.

" Call me Hans...and hmmm... You seem to have an interesting vibe, I wouldn't mind if we had another time like this to ourselves. Do you mind if I asked for your contact though?"

"I thought you'd never ask" she says as she dials her contact in my phone.

As she walks off. I can't seem to stop staring till she is lost.

I should probably start rehearsing how the say it.

'...in sickness and in health, till death do us apart.'I am a happy soul right now and evidently a place like the Frustration square wasn't meant for me. I better get going mate to prepare because 'huu mwaka lazima nipate haha!'

When I become a Dad!

He says that growing up, he had a rather salty relationship with his dad. His dad was the typical African dad. Those fathers who expected everyone to be on their best behavior when they returned home When he spoke, you obeyed. You'd never say anything back. You were never allowed to hold an opinion, and in case you did, you kept it to yourself. Not like in our days, where we have the audacity to scream, "I hate you!" and run to your room and slam doors. He paid fees, and you went to school. He said you'd study medicine, and you said "Yes, dad!" only to discover, during one of your attachment periods, that you hate what you do and end up hating the people you do it with, and the only thing you want to do is stand in front of crowds with a guitar in your hands and a crowd shouting in your direction. We are seated in this spot, under some shade, on a sunny afternoon, the kind of afternoon that makes you think, ‘What if the sun had moved an inch closer to eart...

Of Doomed Men!

Image by Freepik Trust me, when Biko says, ‘it gets better’, I want to so much believe that it does. But yet again, I have seen doomed men, I have seen men who find themselves in a lot of ‘dirt’, men who are born in shackles and have to struggle so hard to find their way out. Men who, by all means, embrace all that it takes to pull themselves out of the mud but are stuck on slippery paths and uncountable setbacks. Men who are born with the verdict already drawn on them, who are paying for crimes they did not commit. Or yet again, don't even know what crimes they are actually paying for. Men whose only crime was trying to be better at being a man.  Men who are stuck in an unyielding pit of darkness, men made of strong broken hearts. Is this what Lucky Dube meant when he sang his famous song… Born to suffer? Because how can so many bad things happen to one person? But guys, what happened to ‘Nothing beats a man with effort?’ Well, the other day a friend narrates how this movie...

26: Old Enough to Know Better, Young Enough to Try Anyway

Wow… 26 already. Time really does fly! Turning 26 feels like standing on the edge of something electric, a place where lessons from the past meet the endless possibilities of the future. It’s that sweet spot where reflection meets ambition, and gratitude meets curiosity. Honestly, it’s a big person’s age, there are things you can’t just do anymore, and yet, there’s so much you can. They say, at 26, you start to know yourself in ways you never did before. You see your strengths, your quirks, and the sparks that make you come alive. You’ve stumbled, you’ve celebrated, and you’ve realized that life isn’t just about reaching a destination, but how you move through the journey. And yes, just like Mike says, the mistakes… they start to cost more. The lessons are harder, the risks weigh heavier, and the stakes feel higher. But here’s the thing: each “expensive mistake” teaches you something you wouldn’t learn any other way. They sharpen your judgment, stretch your patience, and remind you tha...
